Prophylactic Antibiotics

what are prophylactic antibiotics?

Antibiotic prophylaxis is when antibiotics are given as a precaution to prevent, rather than treat, an infection. This practice is common prior to dental procedures for those who meet the requirements due to the bacteria within the mouth. When the antibiotics are taken before the appointment, they can help prevent that bacteria from entering the bloodstream. If a patient's primary care physician (PCP) or surgeon does decide that they require prophylactic treatment, the medication will be prescribed by primary care physicians or surgeons in accordance to the American Dental Association (ADA).
